Book Excerpt: THE 110 Defines True Success

You and I live in a celebrity-driven culture; and our flawed definition of success is largely based on how far we have climbed the proverbial ladder of success, especially if we can somehow manage to squeeze fifteen minutes of fame into that climb.

However, THE 110 have a different definition of success.  THE 110 are not interested in simply being celebrities; they are too busy being everyday heroes. I mean no disrespect to celebrities because there are plenty of A-listers who are part of THE 110 in their tireless efforts to help others. I simply mean that being well known is not the ultimate goal for THE 110.

Whether or not there is some element of fame attached, THE 110 understand that the true definition of success is two-fold. First, success is about setting realistic goals, both personally and socially, and then working toward, attaining and even exceeding those goals. Second, success is about making a positive impact in the lives of the people and the world around us.

Let's take a moment and look at the idea of a ladder of success. The image of a ladder, while being a very popular way to measure achievement in our culture, is flawed because it creates a mental image that we must always climb. The ladder reiterates the false notion that, in order to be successful, we must continue to ascend higher and higher, often at the expense of others.

I would like to propose to you a new metaphor to measure your success: a garden.

Rather than climbing over people to get further up the ladder, what if you and I worked to make our garden more fruitful? What if the measure of our success was not based on how high we could climb but rather on how many people could come and feast on the fruit of our lives?

What if our measure of success was not based on our social altitude but rather on the number of people whose lives were enriched by our labors?

". . . to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." – Ralph Waldo Emerson, credited

Wow!  What an amazing definition of success!

THE 110 exists to leave the world "a bit better . . ."

THE 110 is a new reality, a state of being, a lifestyle based on ethics.  It is about transcending clichés, short-term actions, economic classifications, and political affiliations.  It is about mastering the basics and experiencing true success, true impact, and true exceptional living.  It is about breaking through your perceived maximum capacity and living above and beyond your potential.  You are amazing, and you are capable of unleashing THE 110 within you!
